FAQ

Compassionate Dental Care answers some frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding dental sedation:

Sedation dentistry is the administration of sedative drugs to relieve mild-to-severe anxiety, as well as keeping patients comfortable during longer dental treatments.
You may want to consider sedation dentistry if you:

  • Have a deep-rooted phobia of the dentist resulting in anxiety or panic attacks
  • Are afraid of needles
  • Are overly concerned about pain
  • Have difficulty sitting still for an extended time
  • Are having a long procedure
  • Have difficulty getting numb from anesthesia
  • Gag easily
  • Have very sensitive teeth and gums
  • Become nauseous by the smell of a dental office
Sedation is used to relieve anxiety and to help a patient relax. To relieve pain, anesthesia is used. The combination provides the patient with a relaxing and pain-free dental appointment.
Yes, it’s completely safe as long as it’s performed by a trained and licensed medical professional. As your trusted Lake in the Hills, IL dentist, your safety is our number one concern, and you will be closely monitored to ensure your safety under sedation.
We use three different types of sedation:

  • Nitrous oxide sedation: AKA inhalation conscious sedation uses nitrous oxide gas that you inhale to create a sense of euphoria, although you will be aware of what is going on around you.
  • Oral-conscious sedation: uses a pill(s) that you take orally and works in a matter of minutes.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation: Custom-tailored IV sedation performed by an Anesthesiologist.
The time frame you are sedated usually ranges between one and six hours, depending on the type of dental work you are having done. Your Lake in the Hills dentist is an expert and will provide you with the appropriate amount of sedation needed for your treatment.
If you receive oral-conscious sedation, it’s unlikely that you will remember much about your treatment; in fact, some patients even fall asleep. If you receive inhalation conscious sedation, you might be able to remember some of what happened during your treatment, but your memory will be fuzzy or fragmented. If you receive intravenous (IV) sedation it’s unlikely that you will remember anything from your treatment.

You may experience some minor side effects, including:

  • A dry mouth during or after the procedure
  • A very brief period of amnesia upon waking up
  • Headache or nausea
  • Grogginess (this is usually the most common symptom)
We ask that you have someone drive you home from the appointment. We advise you that you do not operate a vehicle or any other piece of potentially dangerous equipment for at least 24 hours afterward. Basically, take it easy at home for a few hours, ideally with someone there to look after you.

“Made me feel extremely calm…”

“After a lifelong battle of finding a dental office that I felt comfortable and less anxious in; I found it here! Dr. Tim was thorough, informative, helpful and made me feel extremely calm during a root canal of all things! Beyond that, the hygienist, dental assistant, and every staff member I interacted with was personable, compassionate and made me smile! It’s an office where you feel like they all enjoy the work that they do, and care about their patients. I am finally excited to go back to the dentist!”

“…allowed my experience to be less of fear and one of true compassion.”

“I had a complex dental issue but my fear coupled with dental anxiety made it easy for me to not address the issue until pain set in and I had no choice. A friend referred me to Compassionate Dental Care where I met an amazing group of professionals who allowed my experience to be less of fear and one of true compassion. The doctor performed the necessary procedures to correct my dental issue but made sure my comfort level was a priority as he kept me informed throughout the procedure and made sure I was not in pain or discomfort. I now have a new dental practice and in deep appreciation for how they cared for me. Those who understand such dental anxiety, I am a true case of how it was overcome through the care and compassion of this dental practice. Thank you again and kudos to all of you😊”

“This group is wonderful.”

“I’ve always dreaded and put off trips to the dentist. Not anymore. This group is wonderful. Everyone there is great. They understand that many of us are dental chickens. In my experience, it’s very rare to find a doctor or dentist who comes across as someone you can identify with. To a person, everyone in this practice is very cognizant of our fears and they all do their best to alleviate them. Not to mention you can tell they’re all very nice people. If you have a question or concern, just ask. They’ll explain everything to you, and it’s never condescending. I was faced with some pretty major oral surgery and I went to a few places before choosing Compassionate Dental Care.”
